Spanish Civil War







The Spanish Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil Española), widely known in Spain simply as The Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil) or The War (Spanish: La Guerra), took place from 1936 to 1939. The Republicans, who were loyal to the democratic, left-leaning and relatively urban Second Spanish Republic, in an alliance of convenience with the Anarchists, fought against the Nationalists, Catholic, and largely aristocratic conservative group led by General Francisco Franco. 



The war has often been portrayed as a struggle between democracy and fascism, particularly due to the political climate and timing surrounding it, but it can more accurately be described as a struggle between leftist revolution and rightist counter-revolution. Ultimately, the Nationalists won, and Franco, who already ruled over Nationalist Spain, ruled over all of Spain for the next 36 years, from April 1939 until his death in November 1975.

Fish Tank HW 13.12.18

How useful has an ideological critical approach been in understanding binary oppositions in the narratives of your chosen films? The narrative of Fish Tank does not really provide a wide variety of enigmatical or hinting codes throughout its 2h 4m runtime, thus making way for the spectator to understand and form sympathy for the characters of the film or contrastingly feel an indefference towards a character (an antagonist perhaps). The ideological critical approach use in this film, known as british social realism, presents an authentic, gritty prespective on the lives of individuals in low ecomimically gifted children. Certain moments in the film show the desperate scenearios these individuals have to go through, such as Mia’s fatherless child hood or kayla’s young smoking habit. The way these characters are represented in the film spark thought in a spectator’s mind about the different situations others find themselves, and certain scenes encourage the spectator to imagine thems

The craft of creating a film, who’s narrative structure presents certain binary oppositions that when looked at in depth have connecitons to an ideological critical approach can sometimes be used to understand things like the reasoning for an auter’s methods and style per say. In the Andrea Arnold film, Fishtank , one of the opposition that exist is the Youth vs. Adult oppsition that exists between character’s such as Mia and her mother, Joanne, or even some may interpret the relationship beteen Tyla and Mia to represent a Binary oppsition. However the more intriguing Youth vs Old binary conflict is the one between Mia and Conor, which throughout the film’s runtime progresses to become a maternal opposition, and eventually interfers with a seperate opposition - the one between Mia and Connor’s legitimate daughter.
